Sketchbook Assignment: Self-Portrait as Object
As we’re exploring
portraiture in class, keep in mind the definition of a portrait can be
stretched beyond the human face. In this assignment, you are to choose a few 3
dimensional objects that represent you. Place them in a still life together so
that their forms overlap. Render them with a full range of value, environment,
and adhere to our compositional rules. Homework assignments are also posted at
art3withmsrice.blogspot.com. A powerpoint with examples is available there
should you wish to see them.
Things to remember while
drawing:
1.
Draw a ½ inch border
around the edges of your page before beginning
2.
Draw by looking at an
actual 3D object.
a. DO NOT draw from a photograph or your imagination.
We are trying to strengthen your ability to translate a 3D form into a 2D
drawing using what you’ve learned about line, shading, proportion, and value.
b. Seriously, don’t do it. I will know.
3.
Shade objects fully
with lights, mediums, and darks. I should believe I could shrink myself and go
walk around in your drawing because it feels three-dimensional.
4.
Do not neglect
proportions. Use the citing technique to figure out size relationships.
Happy Sketchbooking!
